February is for love...or anti-love. Whatever.
As we jump into February I just want to say I know the world is really scary and overwhelming and just…a lot right now. My day job is with the federal government and every day we have to interpret and implement the newest Executive Order. My job is safe but several programs and projects are on hold and my team is in a constant state of stress. I’m trying to keep myself sane — I spent $80 in fun/ridiculous/absurd cards to send to friends. I’m going to the gym every day and sweating out (some of) the stress. And I’m turning to poetry. I know that sounds trite and/or self-serving, but it’s true. Poetry gives me an outlet, it allows me to escape, and it shows me I’m not alone. When you’re stressed or scared or overwhelmed read a poem or two or an entire book — I promise, it will help.
This month is busy with readings, workshops, and a whole lotta love/anti-love poems — because what else would you expect from me? Details for all readings can be found here! I’m also building my 2025 book tour so if there’s a great reading series / poetry slam / author event I should check out in your city, let me know!
Poetry Coven is Tuesday, 11 February (in-person) or Wednesday, 12 February (online) and I’m doing a Love/Anti-Love theme. On Thursday, 13 February I’m teaching the same Love/Anti-Love generative workshop via the Writer’s Center. Oh, and early bird registration for the Poetry & Yoga Mini-Retreat ends on 9 February so register to snag the discounted price! Yes, February is going to be busy!
What I’m Reading
I’ll be honest, I’ve been insanely busy reading manuscripts — my press, Riot in Your Throat, is open for full length submissions and they’ve been rolling in! We’re only open for two more days so if you have a full length poetry manuscript looking for a home, send it in! I listened to Spells to Forget Us by Aislinn Brophy and it was a fun read featuring queer, Black characters and magic — a great combination. I’m currently reading The Sum of Her Parts by Siân Griffiths. This essay collection focuses on women’s body parts and the roles/parts women play. I’m only on the fourth essay and already I’m loving it — plus the cover is gorgeous! And I’m nearly done with Something about Living by Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, this gorgeous collection of poetry by the Palestinian-American writer is heartbreaking and necessary. Highly recommend you add this to your TBR list.

I hope you’re able to stay safe and sane during this overwhelming, chaotic times.
Best,
Courtney
